About Gavia Health
The mission
Gavia exists because millions of Americans with IBD deserve a health companion that actually understands their condition. Not a fitness app with a medical skin. Not a symptom diary that treats Crohn's like a stomachache.
A purpose-built tool that knows the difference between ileocolonic and pancolonic disease. That understands why missing a biologic is not like missing a vitamin. And that works offline in an infusion center with the same reliability as it does on your couch at home.
An app that speaks the language your gastroenterologist speaks — Bristol scale, biologic adherence, flare duration, baseline frequency, micronutrient malabsorption — without ever talking down to you.
An app that earns your trust before it asks for your data.
The name
Gavia is the genus of the common loon — a bird that has shaped how we think about IBD navigation.
Loons are extraordinary divers. They go deep beneath the surface to see what others cannot. They navigate vast distances across changing conditions — open water in summer, coastal ice in winter, weather they cannot predict. They are quiet on the still water but they are present. They make their home in places others have written off as too cold, too remote, too hostile.
That is what it looks like to live with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. You learn to navigate changing conditions. You learn to see beneath the surface of your own body. You make a home of a condition that the rest of the world doesn't want to talk about.
The loon, in flight, is the symbol of that resilience. And of the long, patient distance you cover, one day at a time.
Every screen in Gavia is held to one question: does this earn the trust of someone managing a lifelong condition?
That means the app works offline — because hospital basements and infusion centers do not always have Wi-Fi. It means dark mode is not an afterthought — because 6 AM medication logging should not blind you. It means data is encrypted with the same seriousness a clinic would use — because this is health data, not a to-do list.
It means the trigger food algorithm uses deterministic math, not guesswork. It means the AI never sees your name, your medication names, or your individual entries. It means every chart, every trend line, every report reflects real numbers you actually tracked.
Precision is not optional when someone's health depends on it.
The approach
Every feature in Gavia gets weighed against these. If it fails any of them, it doesn't ship.
Hospital basements have no Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have no signal. The app works either way, every time. Sync is a luxury — function is the floor.
We use the words your GI uses. We don't simplify the names of your drugs. We don't soften the Bristol scale into emoji.
Trigger correlations are deterministic — actual statistics on actual data. AI is the wrapper around the math, not the source of truth.
GutGuide and the report agents are useful, careful assistants — not oracles. They reference your data, never invent it. They defer to your doctor.
The app exists to make you a better partner to your care team. Not more dependent on us. Export your data. Delete the app. Take it elsewhere. We're a tool, not a trap.
